6 best AI image generators for anime in 2026

Key takeaways

  • Mage ranks first for anime. It runs the Illustrious and Pony families unlimited from $10 a month and Anima from $30, and its saved Characters hold one face on Mango 3, a Mage exclusive.

  • NovelAI trains its own anime models. NovelAI Diffusion V5 arrived in August 2026, though its character reference tool still works only on the older V4.5 models.

  • A local setup with ComfyUI and an Illustrious or NoobAI checkpoint costs nothing per image, but licenses vary, and NoobAI bans commercial use of the model and its outputs.

  • Midjourney's Niji 7 draws a clean, flat anime look from plain sentences, and it has no character reference at all.

  • Most anime checkpoints read Danbooru-style tags such as `1girl, silver hair, school uniform`. Niji, ChatGPT, and Mango 3 take ordinary sentences.

Which AI image generator is best for anime?

For most people, Mage is the best fit for anime, because one browser account covers the community anime checkpoints, a dedicated anime model, and a saved-character system. NovelAI is the pick if you want a single model trained for anime by its maker, and ComfyUI is the answer if you'd rather run everything on your own graphics card.

Anime asks three things of a generator. It has to hold a flat, line-driven 2D look without sliding toward glossy 3D. It has to read the prompt style its model was trained on, which for most anime checkpoints means tags. And for comics, VTuber designs, or a webtoon, it has to draw the same character twice.

We've ranked the tools below on those three jobs, plus price and setup.

1. Mage: best overall for anime

Mage is a browser-based image and video platform that carries both open anime checkpoints and its own models.

Strengths: The Illustrious and Pony families sit in Mage's catalog and run unlimited from the $10 Basic plan, with LoRAs (one on Basic, two on Pro, five on Pro Plus) and negative prompts. Anima, an anime model from CircleStone Labs that reads Danbooru-style tags, runs unlimited from Pro at $30. For a recurring character, Characters saves one from a single reference image, and Mango 3, a Mage exclusive, takes it with up to 10 references, unlimited at 1K and 2K on Pro. Images carry no watermark, even on Free, and Mage's content rules allow "creative freedom within clear, lawful boundaries."

Limits: Anima, Illustrious, and Pony don't connect to Characters, so locking a face means moving that character to Mango 3. Importing your own checkpoints needs Pro Plus ($60).

Best for: Creators who want tag-based anime art and a recurring character on one account, without a local install.

2. NovelAI: best for a purpose-built anime model

NovelAI trains its own anime image models. NovelAI Diffusion V5, released in August 2026, is the current one, in Full and Curated versions.

Strengths: NovelAI's model docs say V5 Full is twice the size of V4.5 and adds Japanese prompting, transparent backgrounds, better text in images, and up to 22 distinct characters in one image, enough for a fully paneled comic page. Prompts follow tags like `1girl` and `solo`, in a recommended order of subject, character, series, then the rest, and V5 also takes plain sentences. On the $25 Opus plan, images up to 1024 by 1024 at 28 steps cost no Anlas, NovelAI's credit currency, as long as you make them one at a time.

Limits: V5 is NovelAI's first model with a usage cap on Opus's free generations, and past it, every image costs Anlas until the limit refills. Precise Reference, which carries a character over from a reference image, is only available on the V4.5 models and adds 5 Anlas per image.

Best for: Anime-only work on a single, consistent house model.

3. ComfyUI or Forge: best for full local control

Running anime checkpoints on your own computer costs nothing per image and puts every setting in your hands.

Strengths: Illustrious XL, NoobAI XL, and Pony V6 are all SDXL fine-tunes, so they share SDXL's file size, its roughly 8GB memory floor, and its tooling. Our Pony vs. Illustrious vs. SDXL guide covers how they differ. A LoRA trained on your own character art is a reliable lock for a long series, and a lineart ControlNet turns your sketches into finished, colored panels. The NoobAI XL V-Pred 1.0 card gives setup steps for both ComfyUI and reForge.

Limits: NoobAI's V-Pred version is "a v-prediction model (distinct from eps-prediction)" and needs its own settings, and its license prohibits commercial use of the model and of what it generates. The original Forge hasn't had an update on GitHub since July 2025. Setup takes real time.

Best for: People with a capable graphics card who want to pick every checkpoint, LoRA, and control input themselves.

4. PixAI: best for an anime community with LoRA training

PixAI is an anime-focused web generator where users share models and LoRAs.

Strengths: Free accounts get 10,000 daily credits. Paid members can stack 5 to 15 LoRAs per generation depending on the plan, train 3 to 10 custom LoRAs a month for an original character or style, and use Reference Pro, an edit model that changes outfits and poses or rebuilds comic panels from uploaded images in plain language.

Limits: There's no unlimited plan, only credits. The membership guide lists Starter at $7.99 a month billed annually, with 300,000 monthly credits. Turbo Mode and video generation are members-only.

Best for: Anime fans who want a shared model library and their own character LoRA without a local setup.

5. Midjourney Niji 7: best for a polished anime look from sentences

Niji is Midjourney's anime line, built with Spellbrush. Niji 7 launched on January 9, 2026.

Strengths: Midjourney's version docs say Niji 7 follows prompts more closely and introduced "a cleaner, flatter look" to show off its improved line work. Style references work on it, and a Style Creator added in July 2026 lets you browse styles and refine one visually. Plans start at $10 a month.

Limits: Niji 7 can't lock a character. The Niji 7 announcement says character reference "won't be supported by niji 7," and the Edit Model that replaced it on Midjourney's main line works only with V8.1 and V8.2. Unlimited Relax mode starts on the $30 Standard plan, and the Community Guidelines bar gore and adult content.

Best for: Single anime illustrations where the style counts more than continuity.

6. ChatGPT: best for anime edits in conversation

ChatGPT makes and edits images in a chat with Images 2.5, which OpenAI released on September 8, 2026.

Strengths: OpenAI says Images 2.5 is "better at reflecting visual styles" and keeps earlier edits consistent across a multi-turn session. You prompt in sentences, can draw a rough layout with Sketch, and it's on every plan, free included.

Limits: There are no anime checkpoints, tags, LoRAs, or saved characters, so a character lives inside one conversation. Free gets "limited image creation," and unlimited images start on Pro at $100 a month.

Best for: Turning a photo or a rough sketch into an anime-style image without learning tags.

Tag prompts vs. sentence prompts

Most open anime checkpoints learned from Danbooru, an image board where every picture carries tags for characters, series, clothing, and pose. They respond to tag lists. The Anima card asks for lowercase tags with spaces instead of underscores, in an order of quality tags, subject count, character, series, artist, then general tags. Pony V6 wants its `score_9, score_8_up` prefix first.

Sentence-trained models read plain descriptions. Niji 7, ChatGPT, and Mango 3 work this way, and NovelAI V5 and Illustrious v1.1 and later accept both. A tag list sent to a sentence model, or a paragraph sent to an older tag model, usually loses detail.

How to hold a clean 2D style

  • Start with a model trained on drawn art: A photo-first model tends to add 3D shading to anime prompts.

  • Name the finish: Tags like `line art` and `cel shading` push toward flat color and clear outlines.

  • Borrow a look from an image: Style references on Niji and Vibe Transfer on NovelAI's V4.5 models copy a palette and line quality from a picture.

  • Keep LoRAs few: Mage's docs say past two or three, stacked LoRAs "average into mud."

  • Reuse the exact tags: Keeping a character's tags identical from image to image keeps hair, eyes, and outfit in place. For a locked face, see our guide to AI image generators for keeping the same face.

Characters from existing series

Danbooru tagging gives Illustrious and NoobAI broad knowledge of named characters and series, and Pony's model page says it recognizes "many popular and obscure characters and series." NovelAI's recommended tag order has slots for both.

Model licenses cover the model and, in some cases, its outputs. They don't grant rights to a character someone else owns. Mage allows commercial use of what you generate on every plan, while models you import keep their author's license, and the store you sell on sets its own rules for AI-generated work.

Anime AI image generators FAQ

What is the best AI image generator for anime?

For most people, Mage is the most complete option, with Illustrious and Pony unlimited from $10, Anima from $30, and saved Characters on Mango 3. NovelAI suits anyone who wants one purpose-built anime model, and ComfyUI gives the most control on your own hardware.

Is Illustrious or Pony better for anime?

Illustrious and its offshoot NoobAI are usually the better fit for anime characters from existing series, thanks to their Danbooru training. Pony V6 covers anime, cartoon, and furry art and reads sentences as well as tags.

Can Midjourney Niji 7 keep the same character?

Not with a reference image. Niji 7 doesn't support character reference, and Midjourney's Edit Model works only on V8.1 and V8.2. Style references still work on Niji 7.

Do I need Danbooru tags to make anime images?

Only on tag-trained models such as Illustrious, NoobAI, and Anima, where tags give the most control. Niji 7, ChatGPT, Mango 3, and NovelAI V5 read plain sentences.

Can I make anime images for free?

Yes, with limits. ComfyUI is free if you have the hardware, PixAI gives 10,000 daily credits, ChatGPT includes limited image creation, and Mage's free account comes with a one-time 300 Gems.
